We went to Target today as a family. It seems like we always leave with a new something for Max when we do that. He got a new bouncy ball which has turned into Max's exercise ball!

Chewy Tube

To discourage Max from mouthing everything we've been giving him a chewy tube. It is a heavy teether that gives him a lot of oral feedback. And, when he's frustrated chewing on it helps him calm down. For school we're allowing him to wear the chewy. He's getting better at utilizing it when he needs to.

Practicing

The one thing I wasn't worried about with Max starting school was eating. Surprisingly, Max is having a very hard time with snack and lunch time. We don't know if it is the small table because he's used to the booster seat at home. So, we've moved him to his small table for all eating so that he can get used to it. They also prefer that there be no sippy cups. Since Max has difficulty with an open cup without help we're working on it. I got him a cup that isn't a true sippy but that has a lid. He'll pick it up eventually. And, I'm struggling with what to pack Max for lunch. No peanuts are allowed and it also has to be kosher. So, no pork and no dairy products with meat. Max is a PBJ guy at lunch, but sometimes I can get him to eat something hot. I've gotten a sunflower seed spread that Max tolerates, so we'll see. I pick him up at 1:00 so I know he won't starve.

School, Day 2

Max's shadow will start next week. I stayed with him on day 2 to help him on the playground. But, I was able to leave for almost 2 hours. He had lunch, free play and movement with his classmates. The teachers called me about 30 minutes before pick-up to tell me that everything was fine, but that Max was "just done". They wanted his day to end on a good note so they called me before he had a meltdown. After two days they're already starting to figure Max out.

New School

Max started preschool today. I stayed with him, but he didn't need me as much at this school compared to the daycare. We are going to transition him to a shadow next week and after a couple of weeks we hope Max will feel comfortable enough to be there without constant one-on-one help.

One Tired Super Hero

Pee Cups

I have big news, I'm going back to work! The company I worked for prior to having Max offered me a part-time contract gig while somebody is on maternity leave. For the next four months I'll be working from home, but we hope it will turn into a long-term position. I have to do some retraining, and my training supplies came with urine collection cups. Since I won't be working in physician's offices anymore I let Max play with them. A two year old can turn anything into a toy.

Max will be going to "school" several mornings a week now. I've tried one daycare already and decided that it wasn't the best place for him. Next week we're trying another with a lower student/teacher ratio. We feel that Max should be in a classroom with typical children and we think we've finally found a good place for him. For a the initial transition period Max will have a shadow to help him adjust and get to know his surroundings. He's struggling with being around other children and will need a lot of lovin'.

Max vs. Pasta

This time, the pasta won. Max fell asleep at 4:45. I had to fight to wake him up and he ate dinner while practically asleep. I put him in the bath and the bath water turned red! I didn't think I put that much sauce on his noodles.

Max moves constantly, and then he passes out.

Max rode a tricycle for the first time today. His pt used therapy bands to keep his feet on the peddles. She said that Max did better than most of her kids for the first time on the bike. He's a little tall for it, he may need a big wheel.

Getting Max's haircut is drama filled. DJ and I decided to invest in some clippers and attempt it ourselves. Our first try wasn't too bad. Max actually wore the cape, which he has never done at the salon. Although it isn't the most stylist of cuts our abilities will improve with time.
